Versatile Mezzo-soprano Helen Tintes-Schuermann performs throughout
the USA and Europe in operatic roles including Carmen, Azucena, the
Zia Principessa
, the Medium and Elizabeth Proctor and appears
frequently as a concert soloist and recitalist. The mezzo-soprano has
sung at many European theaters and festivals, including Barcelona’s
Teatro del Gran Liceu with Dame Gwyneth Jones, the Alte Oper in
Frankfurt, the Festival du Printemps in Monte Carlo and with Theater
an der Wien/Raimund Theater in Vienna, Austria.

She has interpreted numerous 20th Century works (including European
and World Premieres) and has sung in festivals throughout Austria,
Spain, Germany and Switzerland, where she also recorded for radio and
television. Outstanding performances throughout the Southeastern
United States include Verdi’s Requiem, Bernstein’s Jeremiah Symphony,
the Mother in Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors (‘Magic of
Christmas’ with the Charlotte Symphony), works of Bach and Handel with
the Naples Bach Ensemble, the role of Baba in Menotti’s The Medium and
Mme. Armfeldt in Sondheim’s A Little Night Music.

The mezzo’s repertoire encompasses major works of opera and oratorio,
as well as German Lied, Spanish Song and New Music. Recent
performances include the Mozart Requiem in Austria and South Carolina,
Schoenberg’s The Book of the Hanging Gardens at the Schoenberg Center
in Vienna and recital-masterclasses in China, Spain, Texas, Minnesota,
Illinois, Florida and Virginia. A new cd entitled Para Entonces,
featuring songs by Spanish and American composers, was released in
2008. Performances during 2007-2009 include the role of Mrs. Peachum
in Weill’s Three Penny Opera with Southern Exposure, the Witch in
Hansel and Gretel with Columbia College, J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion
and Handel’s Judas Maccabeus. Most recent engagements include the role of
Suzuki in Puccini’s Madame Butterfly with Battle Creek Symphony,
Michigan, Bruckner’s Te Deum and Brahms’ Alto Rhapsody with the
Columbia Choral Society, as well as numerous recitals and
masterclasses throughout the USA. She performed and taught at the new F.I.M.E.L Festival (Summer 2009) with famed Spanish mezzo Teresa Berganza.

Tintes-Schuermann received the Doctor of Music degree from
Northwestern University and degrees from the Mozarteum in Salzburg,
Austria and the Escuela de Canto in Madrid, Spain. Her teachers
include Elizabeth Fischer, Sherrill Milnes, William Warfield, Paul von
Schilhawsky and Miguel Zanetti. She is co-founder and director of the
International Course in Spanish Music, now the ISMCenter.  Dr. Tintes-Schuermann joins the faculty of the Konservatorium Wien (Vienna Conservatory) in September, 2010.
